A Clinical Study of the Fracture of the Tibia


Abstract
A clinical study of the fracture of the tibia was done on 97 cases, in 92 patients, who were treated at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Chonnam University Medical School, from July, 1977 to March, 1983. The results were as follows:
1. The tibial fracture was 5.6 times more frequent in male and number of open fracture was 1. 2 times as that of the closed one.
2. The age distribution showed that the highest incidence of 26. 1 % was in the third decade. No difference was noted between right and left. The middle onethird was the most frequent level of the fractures.
3. The commonest cause of the fracture was the traffic accident, 77.2 and the comminuted fracture occupied 55% of all.
4. The associated fibular fractures were 55 cases.
5. Among the open fracture, the type 111 showed the highest rate of 41.1% Secondary infection of the fracture site was noted in 17 cases.
6. The conservative measures were resorted to in 64 cases and the operative in 22 cases. Eleven cases resulted in amputation.
